Same as It Ever Was…Only Better

stopmakingsense1I saw Stop Making Sense again last night . Hadn’t seen it since it came out—holy crap, 25 years ago! It was part of an ‘80s film revival series that’s playing throughout the summer at a local amphitheatre. A riveting document of the Talking Heads’ 1983-84 Speaking In Tongues tour, it holds up a quarter-of-a-century later as possibly the best concert film ever. Oh, screw “possibly.” It’s the best. (And yes, I’ve seen The Last Waltz, The Kids Are Alright, Woodstock, Rust Never Sleeps, etc.)

We can’t wait for…

itmightgetloud…It Might Get Loud.
Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) documents the summit of guitar gods Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge. Whose riffs will reign supreme? White has the bluster of youth and The Edge has those wall-of-sound effects, but we’re putting our money on Led Zep’s sonic wizard. The movie opens in New York and L.A. on August 14. We’re praying that it reaches us in the hinterlands soon after!

Third Man/Warner Bros. 11 tracks.
Rating: 3 stars (out of 5).

Like Obama, Jack White seems to take perverse pleasure in spreading himself perilously thin. Since breaking through to the mainstream in 2001 with his band the White Stripes, the Detroit-born guitar hero has tried his hand at acting and album production, moonlighted in the alt-pop combo The Raconteurs, even tackled a James Bond theme. Some of these dabblings have paid handsome dividends—The Raconteurs’ 2006 single “Steady as She Goes” is a gem. Others, not so much. (That Bond theme? Let’s not speak of it ever again.)

Loving the Alien

Okay, so technically he’s not a BWG, at least not on this track anyway, but Moby’s new single, “Pale Horses,” and its video are so haunting we just had to share.
