Where’s Dave?

Here’s a vid of Them Crooked Vultures playing the Lowlands Festival in the Netherlands this week. Unfortunately, due the placement of the camera and its focus on Josh Homme (not a bad thing, mind you), you can only see drummer Dave Grohl for fleeting nano-seconds. But the song, “New Fang,” rocks mightily, as you might expect.

Cute Aussie newcomer Daniel Merriweather snagged Adele as a guest vocalist for his just-released debut album Love & War. Don’t know what he had to do to get the “Chasing Pavements” chanteuse– thoughts drift to prurient places– but it was worth it. Their slow-simmer duet on “Water and a Flame” is the album’s highlight. Check it out.

Amy Winehouse joined the reunited Specials to sing “You’re Wondering Now” at the V Festival in the U.K. on Saturday, Aug. 22. She didn’t add much, but hey, at least she didn’t fall down.
RIP Les Paul (1915-2009)

What can be said about the father of the electric guitar? Without him there would be nothing. Anyway, enough with the hyperbole, here’s a clip of Les playing The Birth of the Blues (with Chet Atkins! Did I ever tell you about the time I met Chet Atkins? Eh, it’s a long and not very interesting story…)

Lungs
Universal Island. 13 Tracks.
Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)
Introducing the most aptly named album of the year. Lungs, the debut effort by London-based singer Florence Welch, is about many things, theatricality, emotional violence and girl power among them. But mainly it’s about Welch’s sometimes frighteningly robust voice, a pneumatic wonder that that hits with stunning force even as she sings about being a “rabbit-hearted girl frozen in the headlights.” (No, I’m not buying it either.) The Arctic Monkeys get waterlogged in the video for their wordy but beguiling new single “Crying Lightning,” produced by BWG fave Josh Homme. (See below.) If you ask us, the vid is a none-too-subtle tribute to Echo and the Bunnymen. But who asked us?

…Them Crooked Vultures.
We’re wetting ourselves a wee bit over the prospect of this new supergroup made up of Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and Led Zep’s erstwhile bassist John Paul Jones. The Vultures made their live debut this week in Chicago and will release an album in October. BWG vows to bring you every scrap of info we can dig up. But first, we must change our trousers…

After more than a decade of exile in indie-label land, George Thorogood returns to the majors– Capitol/EMI, to be exact– with The Dirty Dozen, a scorching set of six new tunes and six re-recordings of “fan favorites” from his glory days. Will the new album produce another classic rock staple á la “Bad to the Bone?” Check out “Born Lover,” the most promising contender:
